Fighting Food Waste during COVID 19 Pandemic

Many food businesses across the Northern Rivers region needed to adapt their businesses quickly and efficiently in order to survive. NE Waste undertake a small research project in the region to highlight some of the initiatives, the challenges faced, and how these businesses helped fight food waste in the process.

Case Studies

Salumi Australia is an artisan manufacturing business based in the heart of the Northern Rivers. Operations began in 2010 making a range of cured and fermented products - known in Italy as salumi - from free range Australian pork.

The rapid reduction in hospitality and wholesale demand due to COVID, helped drive new initiatives to expand the business’s market through retail as well as direct to householders.

A downturn of 80% in our business in the first few weeks meant we need to quickly redefine ourselves to survive. We now offer a fresh produce solution to suit our community’s needs in COVID times and beyond.

By facilitating the flow of produce though the different levels or our business including bakery, deli, restaurant and veg boxes to takeaway meals we’ve managed to avoid food waste and keep supporting our local community.

Love Food Hate Waste is a food waste avoidance education program under the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. It aims to support food businesses with simple steps and handy resources to avoid food waste, educate staff and customers and promote your business.

North Easte Waste

This project is a NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Waste Less Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.
