Where does our recycling go?
When it comes to your kerbside recycling bin, knowing where this waste ends up and how it is processed is key to understanding what can and can’t be accepted. Watch our short video of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in action!
The MRF shown within this video is a private facility located within Chinderah in the Tweed Shire. It sorts kerbside recycling from across the Tweed, Byron, Ballina, Kyogle, Richmond Valley and Clarence Valley Council areas. Lismore City Council has its own MRF located at the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre.
Visits to the MRF may be available through local council waste education programs. Contact your local council for more information.

The region-wide Recycle Right Campaign was developed to simplify recycling messages across the region and provide practical tips that the community can follow when deciding what can be placed into their kerbside recycling bin. Events and workshops during National Recycling Week help our community have a bit of fun and expand their recycling knowledge. Stay tuned for upcoming events.
Recycling beyond the bin
Beyond your kerbside recycling bin, Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) are available in each council area to help residents recycle items such as batteries, old paint, gas bottles, smoke detectors and fluoro light bulbs.
