As a nation, food waste costs the Australian economy $20 billion a year. Householders alone throw away 3.1 million tonnes of edible food each year, which is estimated to be equivalent to a staggering 1 in 5 shopping bags of food.
When we waste food, we also waste the resources used to produce, manufacture, package, distribute and prepare that food – land, water, energy and fuel.
The good news is that there are easy things we can do to reduce the amount of food we throw away. * Start by planning what you are going to eat and writing a shopping list.
- Only buy what you are going to eat.
- Store food correctly – for great tips on making your food last longer check out our A-Z Food Storage Guide.
- Love your leftovers and use up what you already have in the fridge! A stir fry or soup is a great way of making the most of veggies!
